World: Winter kill is now seen as a real threat for malting barley crop

On basis of present acreage estimates the malting barley crop of 2007 cannot fully compensate the shortfall of 2006.

According to market analysts, there is one big "IF": in case of large losses of winter grains due to sharp frost on grounds without snow cover the acreage of spring barley could be expanded much more than under normal circumstances. European, even Russian and Ukrainian weather has been so mild till mid December that winter kill is now seen as a real threat.
